A fun, engaging way to educate and motivate your building users in the correct use of the recycling bins, Recycling Bingo is easy to implement, scalable and supports reduced contamination of recyclables.

This is how it works

Gather together 8-10 items of waste which have been carefully selected to enable engagement is different areas of zero waste management, ranging from the easy to get correct through to the more challenging. Examples maybe:

  • Single use plastic water bottle – obviously recyclable but a good opportunity to engage re designing out waste by adopting reusable bottles.

  • Aluminum can – obviously recyclable

  • Plastic carrier bag – typically unrecyclable but often placed into plastic waste stream. An opportunity to discuss the scrunch test method

  • Paper waste – obvious recycling

  • Food contaminated paper waste – typically not recyclable but often placed into paper waste stream.

Ideally your choice of waste samples for the game would be informed by evidence of the typical types of contamination found in your waste streams. There should be a few easy to get correct items in the selection, the objective is not to make the contestant feel bad about themselves. Your choice of waste samples should reflect the scope and limitations of what is recyclable in your municipality.

Using your existing recycling bins challenge building users to correctly dispose of all items, with prizes being available for anyone who scores a perfect round. The game is conducted using an empty set of your actual waste stations, to enable the hygienic retrieval of the waste samples between each contestant. Similarly the waste samples should be clean and safe to handle by the players.

With everyone who makes an incorrect disposal choice the opportunity exists to give them immediate feedback as to why their choice is wrong and what the correct choice would have been.

The expected outcomes of the game are as follows:

Improved understanding of appropriate waste streams

Reduced contamination rates of recycling waste streams

Reduced use of landfill / general waste for recyclable materials
